Adventures of a Prefrosh My ‘Year On’ [by Vicky Thomas 12] Like most of you reading this, I stalk these blogs pretty frequently. Unhealthily frequently, actually. So, last week, when I was sitting at work er my room and I noticed Matts entry On taking a Gap Year', I remembered that Ive been meaning to write my own entry about the same subject for a while now. I have also been follow-up stalking (I like to think of this as scanning for comments by my fellow 12s in an effort to get to know them better) Matts entry to see if anyone has made an interesting comment, and Ive noticed that some people really seem to hate the deferral idea. Their reasoning seems fair enough, considering it aligns pretty much exactly with the hesitations I had last year when deciding to defer. Now that Im almost done with my gap year, though, I can assure you that ignoring those hesitations was one of the best decisions Ive made in a while. Before I dive into what could potentially be a very over-excited description of what Ive done for the past 11 months, I want to dispel the negative connotations that seem to surround a gap year. One of the concepts that I found particularly helpful with this came from Interim Programs, a Cambridge Massachusetts-based program that helps people plan gap years. When I first walked into their office (I actually didnt end up working with them, because I wanted to plan my year on my own), I was struck by all of their literature that promised to help me plan an unforgettable year on. I really liked this phrase because it negates the notion that a year off is a year-long vacation where you dont actually do anything productive. Not only that, it suggests that the year will be even more productive than a year of your normal routine. And mine definitely has been. To prove it, heres a play-by-play of my year so far. After I graduated from high school in June 07, I shipped off to the Bay Area for a super-incredibly-fun-mind-blowing-unbelievable-and-other-similar-words internship with a renewable energy startup company. At this point, I was actually still technically a member of the Class of 2011. While at Squid Labs out in Alameda, CA, I worked for and with some of the smartest people I have ever met, a lot of whom have degrees from MIT. It was pretty cool to see a bunch of fairly young people making a difference and solving real problems and having a blast doing it. I could go on for a while as to what exactly the internship entailed, but suffice it to say that I designed and built Howtoons, helped test technologies that harness high-altitude wind, helped build a massive roof-deck, went kite-boating, went to Google (and more importantly, ate in one of the many AWESOME Google cafeterias), and met a bunch of really inspiring people. Actually, the internships were later featured in a MAKE article b y Saul Griffith (he spelled my name wrong, but hey, I was pretty stoked to be quoted in an article and have one of my Howtoons published all in the same issue)! As July 07 was coming to an end and I was in denial about having to leave Alameda, I started to reconsider the concept of a gap year; a concept that my parents had been pushing since I skipped 5th grade and became really young compared to my classmates. The whole age thing (I would have been 16 when I started MIT if I hadnt deferred) was one of the main reasons I was first considering taking a gap year, but I was just so excited to start learning and researching and developing and contributing to all the good stuff at MIT that I didnt want to delay what seemed like my entire life for a whole year. However, at Squid Labs, I started to realize that I could learn and research and develop and contribute to a lot of exciting things in a lot of exciting ways if I took a year away from traditional schooling. Still not completely convinced, I figured that leaning towards maybe possibly taking a gap year was about as decided as I was ever going to be. I try to live by the mantra no regrets , though, so I just went with my gut feeling and sent a short outline of what I thought my year would entail off to the admissions office, and I got a prompt reply back from McGreggor: Hi, Vicky. Thank you for your letter requesting a deferral. We will be glad to grant you a deferral your gap year sounds like a ton of fun. For students who defer, we request that they write us a letter summarizing the events of their past year. This letter is due in February, and it can be an email or hard copy. Also, you will need to complete all financial aid forms anew. These are due in February, and include the FAFSA, CSS Profile, and the MIT FinAid form. From this point forward, you will be a member of the MIT Class of 2012. We look forward to seeing you on campus next year, Vicky, and please email me or call if you have any questions or concerns. So, I headed back to the East Coast, and interned with the Lemelson-MIT Program (more on that later) while searching for a volunteer program abroad. I ended up finding Projects Abroad, a UK-based program with volunteer projects all over the world. There are a whole slew of these pay-to-volunteer programs out there (as you will see if you run a Google search for gap year programs), but Projects Abroad seemed to be pretty legit from what I could tell, and they had programs that interested me in equally interesting places. When I got to the French-speaking town of St. Louis, Senegal, (were now in late October 2007, by the way), I moved in with my host family and was informed that even though I had signed up to teach English in a high school, I had been switched over to a different project. I ended up teaching preschool and organizing meals for Talibes (boys whose Quran teachers beat them and send them to live on the streets when the boys parents dont pay for their lessons). This was cha llenging for many different reasons namely that preschool-aged Senegalese kids dont speak French yet, so I had to learn some Wolof, and that there were always way more Talibes than bread, so we had to turn some away. It was definitely an incredible experience, though, and while I struggled with culture shock during my first week, I didnt want to go home at the end. I could go on about Senegal forever, but then you would be here forever, and that wouldnt be good. So I hope these pictures elaborate a little bit, and feel free to ask me any questions! Note the baby bath that we tried to use as a sled. As you can probably guess, that didnt work very well If you havent noticed yet, I dont like to sit still. So, about a month after my return to the States, I headed back overseas this time was to India with my parents. My younger brother is doing his junior year of high school at the Woodstock School in the foothills of the Himalayas, and during January, his school takes the foreign kids on a month-long tour of the country. They invited parents and families, so we joined in for more Chaiiiiiiiiii, Coffeeeeeeeeee and 30-hour train rides than I care to remember. I have to say, the Taj Mahal was a little disappointing up close (it was gorgeous, dont get me wrong, but I had it built up to be this huge palace when its really just a tomb with one room you can go inside). The birthplace of Buddhism, sunrise on the Ganges, Varanasi, and the Himalayas were incredible, though. I have to say that all of the near-death bus and train rides (driving in Boston is a piece of cake compared to driving in India) were SO worth it; I love experiencing new cultures, and seeing my brother after 7 months was one of the best parts of my gap year, hands-down. But the driver steers with his feet behind the elephants ears. That was cool. Just another day in Kolkata Surprisingly, not at Taj Mahal tourists are foreigners. And, I thought these colors were pretty amazing. I think this was taken right before a deep conversation on what exactly it means for an Indian train dinner to be veg or non-veg. About a week and a half after I got back from India, I headed off to Colorado to take flying lessons. Why Colorado?, you ask? Because the instructor I took lessons from does this really cool adventure training where you get to fly around the southwestern states as you learn to fly. So, I flew over the Grand Canyon on my second day of flying, Lake Powell on my third, stayed in Winslow Arizona (and stood on the corner), met Clay Lacy (!!!!!) and a bunch of cool fighter pilots who were happy to let me sit in and turn on the brand-new Learjets they were flying (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) all in one weekend. I was not just bitten by the aviation bug, I was completely eaten alive; I figured I would go out there and get my private pilot certificate and be done with it, but now I want to get my instrument, commercial, and multi-engine ratings after I finish my private (the weather was pretty bad in Colorado, so I didnt finish by the time I had to come homeIm working on finishing up in New Hampshire now). While I was in Colorado, I got to see and sit in one of these being built, and I flew one of these on my last day. Actually, I now want to major in Course 16 at MIT. Yeah, I am sooo going to be type-rated to fly that someday. Heres what I actually learned to fly in: a G1000-equipped Diamondstar DA40. This one is kind of unrelated but I had to share it with you. On the way to the airport one morning, I saw a bunch of deer jumping over the fence. Welltrying to jump over the fence. So, I guess that brings me to what Im doing now. As I mentioned, I was interning with the Lemelson-MIT Program in the fall, and Im back working for them again until EurekaFest at the end of June. I work primarily with Lemelson-MIT InvenTeams, the Lemelson-MIT Programs grants initiative to foster invention and innovation in high school students. I was on an InvenTeam in high school, and that experience is the primary reason why I even considered MIT for college. Right now, Im helping with a lot of administrative tasks while getting to know MIT better. Ive actually gotten to meet a lot of people and attend some really interesting seminars, lectures, and events all of which have convinced me even more that MIT is the perfect place for me. So, with all of that said, I really hope that you will take Matts advice and at least consider taking a gap year. I know that there are a lot of concerns, but to every concern, there is a pro-gap year response. Isnt it isolating? At times, but you learn so much about yourself, and you learn to branch out. Wont I get bored? I definitely didnt. Go out and find some of the unbelievable opportunities that are out there. There are a lot. They wont always come jumping right out at you, but once you break into the network of exciting opportunities, they will unfold like crazy. Wont a gap year derail my education? Not unless you let it. I learned so many valuable lessons in my gap year that answered the question of why instead of the question of what. I now have a much broader understanding of why I learn what I learn in school, and what I want to do with the skills I gain at MIT when I graduate (basically, I want to be Amy Smith, and build airplanes on the side). Plus, a gap year is a gre at time to recharge and rejuvenate; I kept my mind active while resting the burnt-out-from-high school portion of it. AND, a gap year is a great chance to teach yourself things that youve always wanted to learn but never had time for. Im sure there are a lot of other concerns out there, but I think those are the three major ones. I would be more than happy to answer/respond to any other concerns that you guys have about gap years, though just post a comment and Ill do my best to get back to you quickly! The campus seems a lot quieter now that all of the other prefrosh have gone back home after CPW (WHICH WAS AWESOME), but the excitement and adrenaline that filtrated the air last weekend still linger in me, and I cant wait to see everyone again in the fall. One of the most valuable lessons Ive learned this year is how exciting and important it is to meet and collaborate with the worlds many extraordinary people, and how valuable peoples differences can be. From my fellow volunteers in Senegal and my host sister, to the students I met in India, to the Lemelson-MIT Program staff and the current MIT community, to the aviators in Colorado, and finally to the MIT Class of 2012, I have learned so much and been very inspired this year. The First Film The Elevator - Free Essay Example

Introduction The first film The Elevator depicts the story of a man who cant seem to have a safe elevator ride. At first, he is in danger of the elevator falling as more and more people began to enter. He is scared so he leaves the elevator in fear of it falling due to the weight of the people inside. So, he leaves and goes into the next elevator which is filled with patients of swine flu. He cant have a nice, peaceful and safe elevator ride in the end. Its somewhat a comedy and in the end, it shows that in life you wont always get what you want, and things dont happen the way you would like. One element of mise-en-scene that I would like to show that was present in the film was the use of the costumes. The main character was dressed in dark clothing, especially his shirt which was all black. In contrast the other characters that entered the elevator wore bright colorful clothing. They kind of stood out in the elevator while the main character clothes blended in with the background and only his face were visible. This use of color and costume shows that the other characters have an open-minded attitude and they arent really worried about the weight capacity of the elevator. While the main character is thinking close-minded and kind of thinking dark (the worst) about the situation and ends up leaving the elevator. Now in terms of props and makeup you can tell that the main character is middle class because he is well groomed, has an expensive phone (at the time), and he has professionally casual clothing. He judgment towards the other characters makes him be of higher status because of the way he is looking down upon them. From the film, you can see that it is set in a hospital because it is filled with obese sickly people who are seeking help. The sign saying swine flu treatment center further proves the point. Another element of mise-en-scene that is present in the film is the cinematographers choice of lighting. The lighting is very flat and dull, its something that you would expect in that type of environment. Its high-key because everything is evenly lit and there is no contrast or difference between the highlights and shadows. Inside the elevator, itself is a lot brighter than outside in the hallway. The choice of lighting fits the mood and story that is being portrayed. It also gives us a clear vision of whats going on. It makes it easier for the viewer to analyze whats going on and give further insight into the story because you can see what all the characters are wearing, their possession, etc. Most comedies use high key lighting to create a positive and lively feeling. The use of high key lighting portrays our main character as a bright and calm person because the lighting is very flattering. In opposition if low key lighting was used then he could be seen more as a villain. In terms of cinematography, the film is shown in an omniscient point of view because we can interpret what the character is feeling by seeing what he is doing and how he interacts with his environment. It almost like we are watching what is going on as it takes place, it isnt shown from the point of view of the character. Our main character isnt driven by certain emotions shown the film is shown from eye level, he isnt in power or afraid of another character. Another thing would be the use of depth and focal length used in the elevator scenes. The use of the focal length compresses him into the scene and makes him look small compared to the size and weight of the other characters. He shows in the wide angles as the tiny character overwhelmed by these large people and in the end, he escapes the problem. In one of the shots, there was an overhead angle to shows how cramped and compact the space in the elevator was because of how many people were on it. The films use of mise-en-scene and cinematography effectively portrayed the story that was being communicated. It also added a little bit of story to the and his motivations. Its choice of shots and framing created a sort of suspension which ultimately showed the message.

Research Papers on The History of Art the Artist Christo Javacheff

Introduction The history of art has been compared with that of literature. In comparable respects, both have continuity, change and no progressive improvement. Since they are both works of creativity, their histories are characterized by works that seem to go beyond circumstantial limitations with a timeless appeal. The history of art has evolved since the extant of humans. Today art involve so many disciplines in colleges and universities. (Kristine and Howard 1996 4, 41) Christo Vladimirov Javacheff and Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon are a couple whose works of have contribution to perpetuation and continuity of the history of art. Their impressive works have been marred controversies because of their scale. Christo and Jeanne-Claude were on the same date same time on June 13, 1935. Born in Gabrovo, Bulgaria, Christo studied art at the Sofia academy from 1953 to 1956. He went to Vienna where he enrolled for Fine Arts at Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Only a semester later, he traveled to Geneva and later to Paris in 1958. Following these journeys, he lost his Bulgarian citizenship ending up being without a nationality. At France, he started painting portraits to earn a leaving, an occupation he has likened to prostitution. In his paintings, his signature was his family name â€Å"Javachef† while his earlier works’ signature was â€Å"Christo.† Born in Casablanca and brought up by her father, a military officer in Morocco, Jeanne-Claude’s was brought up by her father alone having divorced with Jeanne’s mother shortly after she was born. Jeanne graduated in 1952 at University of Tunis having studied Latin and Philosophy. She has been described as an extrovert with natural organizational abilities. She smoked, dyed her hair red, and hated cooking. She acknowledged becoming an artist out of her love for Christo. She died on November 18, 2009 in New York from brain complications. Jeanne-Claude and Christo first met in 1958 and married in 1960 amidst controversial flopped wedding between Jeanne and Philippe Planchon. The couple’s work of art revolved around the environmental; in fact, some writers call their works â€Å"the earth art.† Some of their works included â€Å"Wrapped Coast†, Sydney, (1968-69), â€Å"wrapped Museum of Contemporary Art†, Chicago (1968-69), â€Å"Wrapped Monument to Vittorio Emanuele, Italy,† (1970), â€Å"The Pont Wrapped Reichstag†, Berlin (1971-95), â€Å"Running Fence†, California (1972-76), â€Å"Neuf Wrapped†, Paris (1975-85), â€Å"The Umbrellas† Japan U.S.A. (1975-85) amongst many other vast-scale wrapping projects. Jeanne-Claude’s and Christo’s first collaboration was seen in 1961 when they jointly covered port of Cologne’s barrels. This was their first monumental project, â€Å"Iron Curtain† in which they used oil apparel and curtain as mock expression of to the authorized against Berlin Wall. In this work of art, Jeanne-Claude blocked with a curtain wall for a few hours streets in Cologne. The couple arrived in New York in 1964, and settled in the United States before the end of that year. Startlingly, their works were credited to Christo’s until 1994 when installations and other outdoor works retroactively earned credit to both of them: â€Å"Christo and Jeanne-Claude.† While in United States, with limited command of English, Christo displayed his works in several works including Castelli Gallery of New York. Analysis of his works is an excellent prototype of Marcel Duchamp’s concept of conceptual art (Honour and Fleming 2005: 800). Christo has ‘reduced the creativity act to an attractively simple level, using single, intellectual ideas to rediscover the object of, or activity of art.† Jeanne-Claude once disqualified people’s interpretation of their works of arts saying that they absolutely had no purpose beyond being for ‘beauty’ and ‘art’, that their works were not indeed to give any message. While Jeanne-Claude’s view contradicts conceptual art’s definition according Duchamp’s view, both of their works are an excellent manifestation of conceptual art. Arguably, first collaborated work metaphorical of the Berlin wall was an expression of ‘message’ to the authorit ies. The couple excelled in their works of arts. Having exhibited in the galleries across the United States, France, Italy, Germany and other major cities, the resist have had profound effect in the discipline of art. Their art of ‘wrapping’ the natural and human structures have redefined way of exhibiting creative works. There work â€Å"Wrapped Walk Ways† (1977-78) at, Jacob Loose Park, in Kansas City, was complete and figurative expressing the nature of conceptual art. Still in line with the couple’s view of their workshop art as of aesthetic, the work present conceptual art in another perspective. It took them along time to come up with and complete the project. It complied with the rule of conceptual; art set by Duchamp, which depicted human desires and continuity in the piece of work. In the â€Å"Wrapped Ways† project, Jeanne-Claude and Christo installed 12, 450 square meters of saffron-colored nylon fabric on garden walkways and paths covering 4.4 Kilometers of Jacob Loose Memorial Park in Kansas. The installation was done in three days between October 2nd and 4th with 84 people employed to help in the installation. Since the artists never accepted any sponsorship of any kind, all the costs and expenses committed in the project were borne by the couple. They earned by selling preparatory works such as drawings, collages, lithographs and etcetera. (Kristine and Howard 1996: 549) The wrapped walkways and paths remained wrapped until October 16th 1978 when saffron material was removed and recycled by the Kansas City Parks department. This piece of work of art was unique and indeed changed the art scenes and the entire history of art. By using their own to exhibit there works of art, his type of art was one of its own kinds. This project took the art scene, such succinct works of art with such scale-reengineered creativity. The artists, in this project and others precisely conceptualize ideas and with little effort and manipulation the friends of works of arts have been taken aback. Purely designed for beauty and aesthetic, the works portrayed human desires and suggested through unclear, indirect, and intellectual works of art using fantasy. People often want to live in beautiful environments free of dart. This installation not only showed the important aspects of human and the desire of the American people but also portray how new ideas and creativity can be c ombined to bring new styles of art and varying definition of challenging experiences of art in general. Their work â€Å"The Running Fence† was acquired in definitive record in 2008 by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Installed in Sonoma and Marin Counties, California in 1972-76, the work was one of the many temporary installations of that that took those 42 months of collaborative efforts to install. It was 24 ½ miles long and 18 feet high, with one end dropping down to the Pacific Ocean. This monumentally vast work of art was contracted out of 240000 square feet of heavy white woven fabric of nylon, steel cables measuring over 150 kilometers long, 2050 steel posts, 350, 000 hooks and 130, 000 earth anchors. The project was entirely sponsored by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The erected fence stood for only two weeks in the September of 1976. The work has been filmed into â€Å"Running Fence revisited† The Running Fence Revisited are screened in some of the major exhibition galleries. Janet Maslin, a New York Times art writer, once described the Running Fence in the film as â€Å"the next best thing to have been in existence.† The Running Fence story is not a tale just unlimited endurance but a story of two artists whose works were nearly over insurmountable. The Running Fence was a temporary creativity of art, odds enough but delivered joy and beauty to the lovers of art; it was a story of and about the people, places, and events. The installation made many more aware of the incredible art and other possibilities of creativity works. This conceptual art stunned the world of art. The â€Å"Running Fence† stunned the people of Sonoma County and the rest of the world. â€Å"There will never be another Running Fence,† Christo said in an Eye Level interview. Indeed, there will never be another â€Å"Running Fence† and if it were, then will no longer be creative enough to attract and influence other artists. As a way of appreciating their works, the couple regularly got requests from cities or organizations to replicate their works in other places. Commenting on the requests, Christo said, â€Å"that misses the point. The power in the art is in its transitory.† (Pagliasotti 2002) Richard B. Woodward, an art writer asserts that the Running Fence has been called one of the â€Å"most influential art projects of the 20th century.† He records Christo’s comments about the project while revisiting the site twenty years after the event â€Å"it was certainly one of the most successful. It is amazing to hear many people say viewing Running Fence changed the way they looked at the landscape and art forever.† Christo’s and Jeanne-Claude’s, art, their creation, was able to affect them in a way the traditional artists could not. (2010). At the removal of the installation, the materials were donated to the local and the authorities. Nearly half people present at the event seemed to have found a way to reuse the materials from the project. Being farmers, they used them in their ranging operations. Some made windbreaks with the fabric and the project ended officially in September 1976, exactly a fortnight after its installation. While this brought physical end to the piece of art, the Running Fence has remained alive. The actual Running Fence is gone, the materials have been converted for other uses, but the memories live on to date. For instance, at American Art Museum, Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Remembering the Running Fence has been devoted to one of the couples most ambitious and evocative works of art. Whether Running Fence would be impossible to accomplish in todays America is hard to gauge. The nearly bare contours of beautiful hills were made more sensual by the project. The visual variation of the piece as it responds to sun, wind, fog, and ocean are attractive. The determination of the couple of artists and their resolute faith and love for the works of and their unusual ideas seem to have earned confidence, respect, trust, and affection from people who had never heard of site-specific art. Christo involved the community in his works. While persuading over 57 farmers to allow the fencing cross their lands Christo told them: The art project is right now here with us. We are partners in this work of art.† (Donovan 2002: 97, 115) â€Å"Were surrounded with repetitious things. Worlds Fair, Olympic Games, each four years happen, Walt Disney all that is all the routine we live. In addition, this project happened once†¦ There was once the Running Fence or Wrapped Coast.† Christo in an Australian TV interview once said in 2004. To date, the lasting impact of Running Fence on the new ‘art society’ born after the project has continued to ignite serious conversations about what is art among citizens who had never thought it was relevant a question. It is commendable that the Smithsonian American Art Museum bought the project archive for Running Fence in 2008.
